Random Group Generator privacy policy

Random Group Generator splits a list of names into groups in the browser. You can paste names, choose the number of teams or people per team, add keep-together or keep-apart rules, and copy, print or save the teams as CSV. This policy describes the extension's storage and the hosted pages it opens.

Names and group results

  • The names you paste are the input of the split, often a class list. The current names and saved lists are written to the browser's extension storage on this device so that you can return to them.
  • The lists you save use the same storage. Each saved list includes its name, the names on it, attendance, and creation and modification times. The limit is 50 saved lists.
  • The teams on screen are computed in the open tab from your list and a seed. The extension stores the names, split rule, keep-together / keep-apart / pin constraints, seed and splitter version used to redraw a split, rather than the finished team cards.
  • Copy, print and CSV send the result to the clipboard, the browser's print dialog or a file saved on your device when you select the corresponding action.

Extension storage

The extension uses two entries in the browser's extension storage:

  • randomGroupGenerator.v1 holds saved lists, current names and attendance, the split rule and constraints, seed and splitter version, remembered controls (cards / tables / columns, projector, leftover strategy and last rule), and an export count.
  • randomGroupGeneratorRatePrompt records when the rating line was shown and whether it was answered or dismissed. It limits the prompt to three appearances in a month and stops it after an answer or dismissal.

The names on a list are personal data of the people you group. The extension uses device-local storage rather than browser sync storage. You can replace or clear the current list, delete a saved list, or remove the extension to delete its stored records. A 51st saved list is refused rather than replacing an existing one.

Pages the extension opens

  • The welcome page opens after installation and is bundled with the extension. It explains how to pin the extension and open the workspace.
  • The goodbye page is a hosted page that Chrome opens on removal. Submitting the survey is optional. The configured removal URL has no query parameters. Feedback can include a selected reason, an optional comment, the extension version and interface language, and is delivered to the publisher through Telegram.
  • The rating line appears after completed work. One, two or three stars open the hosted rating page, with the chosen star count and interface language in its address. Comments are optional and use the hosted feedback service. Four or five stars open this extension's Chrome Web Store reviews page once its store ID is configured; before that, the rating line reports that the reviews page is not yet available.

Analytics

The welcome page and the hosted goodbye and rating pages carry analytics used to count installs and removals by country.

Legal bases

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we handle data on the basis of your consent and to perform the feature you asked for. The names you paste are read to split the teams you requested. You can stop processing in the extension by stopping the job or removing the extension.

Retention and deletion of extension records

  • Current names remain in randomGroupGenerator.v1 until you replace or clear them or remove the extension.
  • Saved lists remain until you delete them or remove the extension.
  • Team cards are recomputed in the open tab from the stored names and seed.
  • Remembered controls remain until you change them or remove the extension.
  • The rating record remains until you remove the extension. Answering or dismissing the rating line updates this record rather than deleting it.
  • Exported CSV files remain where you saved them until you delete them.

These storage periods describe the extension's on-device records, separately from feedback submitted through the hosted pages.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have rights over your personal data:

  • GDPR / UK GDPR: access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, objection, withdrawing consent, and lodging a complaint with a supervisory authority (such as the ICO).
  • CCPA / CPRA (California): to know, access, delete and correct your data, and not to be discriminated against for exercising those rights.

The extension's controls let you replace or delete lists. Removing the extension deletes its extension-storage records. Exported CSV files must be deleted separately.

Security

The browser profile and device control access to extension storage. Consider who can access that profile when saving a list of names.

Children

Random Group Generator is intended for users 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

Limited Use

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Changes to this policy

This policy takes effect on 3 September 2026. This version describes the hosted feedback pages and updates the analytics wording.
